The project “Consolidation of the Electoral Process in Zambia: Support to the Electoral Cycle 2015-2018” aims to consolidate the gains of previous electoral cycle support projects and broader UNDP programmatic support in the area of democratic governance. It provides demand-driven support to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and other national entities (CSOs, media, political parties, government bodies) to enhance the quality and credibility of electoral processes.Project activities fall under five key outcome areas that target enhanced effectiveness of the ECZ to conduct elections, improved integrity of election outcomes, women’s leadership of political parties, electoral dispute resolution mechanisms and the credibility of media in the electoral process.

The project is a UNDP-managed multi-donor basket project that amounts to around 7.7m USD and is funded by the European Union, DFID, Irish Aid, USAID, and UNDP. The project started in February 2016, prior to the last general elections, and runs to 31 December 2018.

The project seeks an intern to support overall project management activities and assist in the finalization of remaining interventions, as the project draws to a close.

Duties and Responsibilities
SupervisionThe intern will work closely with the electoral project Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist, the Finance Associate, as well as the Governance Programme Analyst, under the overall supervision of the Electoral Project Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will work within the areas of the Programme’s main programmatic activities outlined above, assisting the electoral project team to perform the following:

  • Provide support as needed to overall project management of the electoral cycle project, including ongoing tasks and activities relating specifically to project completion;
  • Assist in the design, preparation and implementation of project activities;
  • Assist in drafting reports, presentations and other project documentation;
  • Support project monitoring and evaluation, as needed;
  • Assist in accurate and accountable financial execution of project activities;
  • Provide administrative and logistical support to project activities, meetings and events; attend meetings/events and prepare minutes or notes, as appropriate;
  • Coordinate with project partners and UNDP units in the execution of activities;
  • Conduct research on electoral issues, including on comparative examples;
  • Monitor the news for relevant developments in the electoral context;
  • Develop an electronic archiving system for electoral project files;
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Electoral Project Manager or designate.

Required Skills and Experience
EligibilityApplicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or

equivalent, or higher);

Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);

Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Qualifications and Experience

Eligible applicants (as described above) should be enrolled in a degree programme or recently graduated with a degree in international relations, political science, public policy, social sciences, public administration, gender studies, or related field.

Language:

  • Fluency in English, both verbal and written.

Remuneration

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of:

  • The nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or
  • The intern, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence through private sources.

The intern may be provided with a stipend for travel expenses, as applicable.

Learning Expectations

The internship will provide an opportunity for the intern to gain experience in the day to day running of an international project, and exposure to working on electoral issues, as part of the UNDP Governance Programme in close cooperation with the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

Conditions

  • Interns are considered gratis personnel. Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of the internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrolment in a health insurance plan and provide a certificate of good health prior to starting the internship.

Shortlisted applicants must submit the following documents prior to the interview:

  • An official letter from the University confirming enrolment in a graduate-level degree programme and specifying the expected graduation date;
  • Letter of endorsement from a senior faculty member who has directly supervised the student in the recent past and who is fully acquainted with the student’s performance;
  • Copy of current school transcript.
