University Librarian Job: University of Zambia


JOB TITLE: UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN
PURPOSE: Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor and as a Principal Officer, shall be responsible for the development, control, management and coordination of library Services in the university in line with the requirements of the Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013 and the policies and procedures approved by the University Council.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide vision, leadership and management for the operations of the library.
  • Develop, implement, supervise and evaluate the library’s long term and short term strategic plans, programmes, and services, in support of the university mission and goals.
  • Develop, interpret and implement library policies and procedures.
  • Manage library resources, including developing plans for the allocation and reallocation of resources between main library and branch libraries; supervise the maintenance of physical infrastructure.
  • Formulate and implement a strong evolving programme of public services to facilitate access to information resources.
  • Plan and supervise the acquisition, classification, cataloguing, shelving, and circulation of the library materials and maintenance of records concerning their issue and return related matters.
  • Ensure an efficient and effective management and development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services within the library
  • Encourage and support diversity in the work place.
  • Prepare and control the library budget and expenditures.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimally qualified for entry into University.
  • Minimum of Masters Degree in Library and Information Studies
  • PhD in Library and Information Studies will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of (10) years relevant working experience in an academic library.
  • Membership with a professional organisation.
The position of University Librarian is a performance-based contractual job and the successful candidate will be offered an attractive and competitive remuneration package.
