JOB CONTEXT

WeForest Zambia is a local NGO that is continuously aiming for improved performance of its main aim: Lasting Forest Landscape Restoration in Zambia. The extensionist will work in a dynamic team on our objective towards increasing forest cover in smallholder farmers’ Miombo woodlots as a scalable solution for climate mitigation and adaptation, livelihood improvement and gender equitable development. The extensionist will work under the direct supervision of the Copperbelt Project Manager and will mainly be active in the field in Mpongwe.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Implement Farm Forestry Projects at the district level
• Conduct socio-economic surveys to assess baseline and follow-up
• Collect field data and assist in the mapping processes
• Lead training among farmers at the district level
• Assist with the selection of pilot and lead farmers
• Assist with the functioning of the local farmer associations
• Lead activities in the field and in the nursery, overviewing and leading forestry activities (such as beekeeping, tree planting and forest inventories)
• Communicate directly with Project Manager amongst other

CANDIDATE PROFILE

• Education: A minimum of B.Sc. in Forestry or equivalent
• Language: Fluent in English (both speaking and writing) and Bemba
• Experience: Minimum 3 years’ relevant work experience in the forestry sector
• Driving license: A valid Motorcycle driving license with clean driving record & proven ability to ride on challenging terrain
• Familiarity with GPS devices
• Skills: Excellent coordination, training and communication skills
• Strong and persistent with fieldwork
• Practical experience with beekeeping is a plus

TASKS

• Implement best practices in day to day management of the project activities
• Demonstrate leadership and show own initiative
• Coordinate and assist livelihood mentors under your responsibility
• Ensure training and extensionist services towards farmers are up to standards and timely
• Provide technical advises ensuring a good partnership with all stakeholders to guarantee project outputs
• Collect quantitative & qualitative field data (socio-economic data, forest inventory/vegetation survey, GPS coordinates, etc.)
• Facilitate consultancies, project visits and other services on behalf of WeForest/ third parties for scientific studies & analysis
• Provide appropriate and frequent reporting in full transparency and integrity, being coachable for improvement
• Not engage the organization legally or financially beyond agreed
• Handle internal information and data as confidential
•  Conduct safe and clean keeping of office, vehicles and other WeForest equipment

CONDITIONS

• Full-time, up to a maximum of 44 hours per week. Working Monday through Saturday morning, hours will vary depending on project needs and flexibility is essential.
• Extensive travelling in the project area. Applicant has to be willing to reside in remote areas
• Fixed term one-year contract, with potential to extend to a two-year contract subject to performance and availability. A three months’ probation period is included in the contract.
• Based close to Mpongwe, where the Project office will be established.
• Remuneration based on experience but approx. 8,750 ZMK monthly gross salary (gratuity and allowances included).
