POLICY, ADVOCACY AND FUNDRAISING TRAINEE

Zambia Land Alliance (ZLA) is a network of non-governmental organizations advocating for policies and laws that take into account the interests of poor rural and urban communities. ZLA is currently seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals to take up the position of Policy Advocacy and Fundraising Trainee.

The successful candidate will work with the ZLA programmes team to deliver successful media strategies, and integrated communications and advocacy campaigns, to build the organization’s profile, research portfolio, increase our reach, raise awareness of our work and demonstrate the urgent need to secure land rights and improve land governance in Zambia.

Job Purpose
Contribute to the development of more rigorous research, advocacy, and resource mobilization.

Duties, Roles, and Responsibilities

a. Support ZLA to develop research in key thematic areas

  • Conduct reviews of relevant literature for identification of critical evidence gaps on land
  • Contribute to the identification and development of research project framework, including terms of references for external researchers where appropriate
  • Support staff, members, and partners to develop research methodologies and collect quantitative and qualitative data for case study
  • Contribute to undertaking research and analysis on policy and activities
  • Monitor relevant policy debates and provide briefs on topical issues
  • Liaise with other programme staff to identify appropriate case studies data sources and issues

b. Advocacy

  • Assist in design and drafting of advocacy papers for different audiences capturing key research findings
  • Collaborate with the information officer and other staff in the design and editing of advocacy/discussion papers
  • Consult and liaise with key staff within ZLA to develop clear and evidence-based messages
  • Assist in the design and implementation of the external dissemination strategy for papers.
  • Work with the Land rights and Empowerment Officer to develop policy positions on key issues relating to land emerging from research,
  • Assist in the writing, design, and drafting of policy and advocacy outputs, such as reports, briefings, fact sheets and position papers
  • Prepare relevant presentations, at least one policy brief, assist with desk research on a range of thematic topics, including land grabs, common property resources, women and children’s rights.
  • Working with other ZLA staff to increase the coverage of land issues in the national and local media
  • Assist with organizing advocacy events such as press conferences, book launches or other conferences.

c. Fundraising, Project Development, and Management

  • Compile and maintain a database of international and local donor organizations (
  • Regularly monitor donor websites and identify and inform donor opportunities matching the work of the ZLA
  • Assist the programmes team in the development of concept notes, project ideas and project proposals and ensure their timely submission
  • Undertake independent research in finding alternative resources for long-term sustainability of the organization
  • Suggest other innovative ideas for effective resource mobilization.

Deliverables

  • Development of at least two short project proposals
  • Contribute to the development of one long term project proposal developed
  • Proposals on how to improve ZLA’s research work
  • Undertake at least one study
  • List of potential funding sources compiled
  • Analysis of key documents, Zambian and international laws and policies.
  • Contribute to the design an advocacy strategy in Zambia.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from a reputed university in Media Studies, Development Studies, Public Policy or any relevant social sciences.
  • Knowledge of Kaonde or Luvale will be an added advantage
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience in undertaking research (should be able to evidence this)
  • Candidate must have knowledge of natural management in Zambia
  • Must be computer literature
  • Good working knowledge of statistical software such as SPSS will be an added advantage
