The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) is Zimbabwe’s only University of Open & Distance Learning (ODL), with more than thirty (30) diploma and degree programmes administered through centres in all the ten (10) provinces of Zimbabwe and the virtual region for international markets. The University is highly dynamic and employs all multi-media ODL delivery methods. The Zimbabwe Open University exists to empower people through lifelong learning thereby enabling them to realise their full potential in an affordable and flexible manner without disturbing their current life styles. Suitably qualified, experienced and motivated candidates are invited to apply for the following posts that have arisen within the Zimbabwe Open University:
- DEAN (4 YEAR CONTRACT) : FACULTY OF COMMERCE AND LAW (1 POST)
FACULTY OF ARTS AND EDUCATION (1 POST)
FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE (1 POST)
The Dean will report to the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leading the Faculty in initiating effective distance education delivery system, pedagogue and materials development;
- Providing academic leadership in the areas of teaching, learning and research;
- Promoting the University’s wide initiatives;
- Developing a sense of community for the Faculty students, academic and support staff;
- Generating income for the institution through Faculty initiatives;
- Developing intra and inter Faculty interfaces to enable programme horizontal and vertical articulation to multi-skill the students;
- Ensuring that departments in the Faculty engage in research projects to contribute to new knowledge experience in the area of distance education and as part of service to the community;
- Developing effective marketing strategies for the University programmes to both the private and public sectors; and
- Undertaking any other duties as and when required by the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of a PhD in the relevant area;
- A Professor would be preferable
- At least three (3) years post qualification experience in an academic institution of which two (2) years must be at the level of Chairperson or above; and
- Knowledge and experience in distance education will be an added advantage.
- REGIONAL DIRECTOR : BULAWAYO REGIONAL CENTRE (1 POST)
MIDLANDS REGIONAL CENTRE (1 POST)
The Regional Director will report to the Registrar.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Providing leadership, guidance and support to the Regional Centre in order to ensure the achievement of the objectives set by the University;
- Developing and establishing effective plans and structures for controlling income and programme implementation, coordination, management monitoring and evaluation;
- Establishing effective structures for controlling income and expenditure in line with procedures of the University;
- Attending all University Committee meetings and stakeholders’ meetings necessary for coordinating the activities of the centre as well as disseminating information about the centre;
- Liaising on behalf of the University with donor organisations/institutions to negotiate funding and other assistance needed to successfully implement the programmes at the Regional Centre;
- Promoting staff and student recruitment;
- Organising periodic reviews of the Centre’ activities to produce reports on the reviews;
- Supervising tutorials by arranging venues, furniture and verification of students’ registration;
- Attending to students’ grievances through channels provided by the ZOU Act;
- Ensuring that students’ have modules; and
- Carrying out any other duties as directed by the Registrar.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Educational Management, Social Sciences or Master of Business Administration (MBA);
- A PhD or studying towards one would be an added advantage;
- At least three (3) years relevant post qualification experience in administration work in a University environment;
- The applicant must demonstrate a vision, knowledge and skills of running an Open and Distance Learning Centre; and
- Must have served in a University at the level of Lecturer for a period of at least two (2) years.
- DIRECTOR: CENTRE FOR ODL, RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP (1 POST)
The Director will report to the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Formulating policies related to research and development within the Zimbabwe Open University;
- Coordinating all research activities in ZOU;
- Monitoring external joint research projects between ZOU Units and other organizations in and outside Zimbabwe for purposes of both, generation of knowledge and income;
- Co-ordinating and assisting departments when writing proposals for grants, pertaining to topical issues;
- Facilitating the assessment of articles presented for publication in the ZOU Journal;
- Co-ordinating research publications in the institution mainly through the ZOU Journal;
- Conducting research awareness meetings and training with the various stakeholders at ZOU;
- Identifying suitable research seminars for ZOU staff within the SADC region and beyond and facilitating participation;
- Assisting ZOU staff members to produce suitable research papers for presentation at seminars.
- Organizing seminars at ZOU to which participants from within the SADC and beyond, will be invited;
- Reporting periodically on the progress made in research at ZOU;
- Co-ordinating the ZOU National and International conferences;
- Carrying out any other duties as and when required by the Pro Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of a PhD in Education or Social Sciences;
- Professorship would be an added advantage;
- At least three (3) years post qualification experience in research work at a University; and
- The applicant must demonstrate a vision, knowledge and skills of running an Open and Distance Learning Research Centre.
- MANAGER, LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES: NATIONAL CENTRE (1 POST)
The manager will report to the Director, Library and Information Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Strategic management of the LIS system, i.e. post-implementation audit, planning and integration of the Library system with the University-wide system;
- Providing support for Library software as required;
- Planning and implementing the development of a Virtual Library and Information service;
- Providing of a WWW information service linking staff and students to electronic resources and online databases on the web and Internet;
- Developing WWW resources and the use of the Web to deliver teaching and learning materials;
- Designing teaching and learning materials for Internet and Intranet services;
- Designing online information searching instructional materials used in user education in consultation with the academic staff;
- Providing support and assistance for video-conferencing and other AV facilities.
- Administering computer usernames and access passwords;
- Train ZOU staff and students in the confident use of electronic resources such as the Internet, Intranets, web databases, OPACs, CD-ROM databases and other multi-media resources;
- Advising users on computing rules and regulations;
- Providing links to ‘Open Access’ electronic resources, other ‘open’ libraries and conventional libraries collection on the Internet;
- Participating in the design and development of the University’s web site and web pages for various departments of the university;
- Participating actively in work groups and task forces as required;
- Assisting with the provision of IT Help service in conjunction with the University’s IT Helpdesk;
- Participating in data collection and analysis for the Library’s MIS;
- Contributing to the organisation and maintenance of information resources disseminated on the WWW;
- Supervising and co-ordinate the administration and management of regional centre libraries;
- Liaising with appropriate staff in the Information Service; and
- Undertaking any other duties as and when required by the Director, LIS.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- A degree in Library and Information Sciences or equivalent;
- Masters of Science Degree in LIS would be an added advantage;
- At least two (2) years post qualification experience;
- Substantial relevant working experience with ICT in academic libraries and other information centres would be required.
- PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER: DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT (1 POST): FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leading in the development and launch of new programmes;
- Developing learning materials/modules for distance learners;
- Conducting educational research;
- Promoting the University’s wide initiatives;
- Coordination of activities for Diploma/Degree/Master programmes at the Region;
- Providing academic leadership in materials production, teaching, learning and research;
- Promoting community service; and
- Interfacing with other Faculties.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- A minimum qualification of a Master of Science degree in Physical Education and Sport or Sports Science from a recognised university;
- A PhD in Physical Education and Sport or Sports Science or proof of study towards one would be a distinct advantage.
- A minimum of two (2) years teaching experience in a recognised University;

- LEGAL SERVICES OFFICER (1 POST): LEGAL SERVICES UNIT
The Legal Services Officer will report to the Registrar.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Providing legal services to various Units of the University;
- Identifying and resolving legal issues affecting the University;
- Drafting and negotiating various contracts with service providers;
- Liaising with external lawyers on behalf of the University;
- Dealing with public liability and prosecution;
- Attending to court matters pertaining to the University;
- Ensuring compliance with statutory requirements governing the operations of the University; and
- Performing any other duties as assigned by the Registrar.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Laws Honours Degree from a recognised University;
- A Master of Business Administration or Masters of Laws (LLM)degree will be an added advantage;
- Must be a registered legal practitioner;
- Must have at least two (2) years relevant post qualification experience.
