The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) is one of the Region’s leading and Zimbabwe’s only University of Open & Distance Learning (ODL), with more than 30 degree and diploma programmes and centres in all the 10 provinces of Zimbabwe. Suitably qualified, experienced and motivated candidates are invited to apply for the following post(s) which have arisen within the Zimbabwe Open University.

POST A:  COMPUTER PROGRAMMER (1 POST):  INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY UNIT

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Setting up development environment with appropriate tools;
  • Confirming projects requirements by reviewing program objective, input data, and output requirements with the analyst and supervisor;
  • Encoding project requirements by converting workflow information into computer language;
  • Developing and  testing various software applications as per request from various Units of the organisation through the Systems Analyst;
  • Maintaining historical records by documenting program development and revisions;
  • Preparing systems technical documentation;
  • Providing technical support to existing software applications;
  • Preparing reference for users by writing operating instructions;
  • Preparing a monthly report on work done; and
  • Performing any other duties as delegated by the Manager ICT (Software).

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or relevant equivalent is pre-requisite;
  • Must have at least two (2) years relevant post qualification work experience.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

The successful applicant should be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of the following:-

  • Database: Postgres, MySql, MSSQL;
  • Operating systems: Windows 2008 or higher, Linux;
  • Programming tools: Eclipse, Spring Source Tool Suit, NETBEANS;
  • Web development tool: CSS, Dreamweaver;
  • Application Packages: Belina, Pastel

POST B: ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT: VARIOUS DISTRICT CENTRES (27 POSTS)

For this post applicants should be suitably qualified and experienced ODL practitioners. Please note that these will be one (1) year contract appointments and only people who studied through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) or experienced ODL practitioners need to apply.

The Administrative Assistant will report to the Regional Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruitment of students into the various University programmes;
  • Marketing University programmes in and around the area of operation;
  • Keeping the District Centre records of students who consult the Centre for services and facilitating communication with students who have special needs;
  • Communicating with students on issues pertaining to their learning and welfare;
  • Facilitating research processes through dispatching and receiving of research material;
  • Carrying out preliminary assessment and first line counseling to students with regard to queries and grievances; and
  • Performing any other duties as may be assigned by the Administration Officer.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Applicants should possess a Bachelors Degree in Commerce, Marketing, Business Studies, Social Sciences, Administration or Humanities from a recognised University;
  • At least two (2) years relevant  post qualification experience in an administrative position;
  • Experience in an Open and Distance Learning mode will be a distinct advantage.
  • High levels of computer literacy.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Marketing and presentation skills;

  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality

POST C: CHIEF SECRETARY: HUMAN RESOURCES UNIT (1 POST)

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ordering and distribution of all  stationery;
  • Servicing of meetings;
  • Exercise discretion and extreme confidentiality on sensitive Communication;
  • Attending to routine correspondences and drafting responses where necessary;
  • Ordering of office requirements;
  • Controlling of incoming and outgoing mail;
  • Responding to telephone and written queries;
  • Filing office correspondences;
  • Photocopy documents; and
  • Performing any other duties as assigned by the Manager, Human Resources.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least a National Diploma in Secretarial Studies;
  • 5 ‘O’ level passes including English Language;
  • Advanced Typewriting (50 wpm) and (80 wpm) Shorthand/Dictaphone; and
  • At least two (2) years relevant post-qualification experience.

POST D: CLASS (1) DRIVER (1 POST): CORPORATE SERVICES UNIT

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Driving the University bus and other vehicles;
  • Delivering documents and goods as assigned by the Transport Officer;
  • Ensuring that a vehicle log book is filled at all times when using a vehicle and;
  • Carrying out any other duties as assigned by the Transport Officer.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • 5 ‘O’ level passes including English Language
  • A clean Class  One (1) driver’s license
  • Defensive Driving Certificate and Medical Examination Certificate is a must
  • A Driver with mechanical background will have an added advantage
  • At least five (5) years driving experience.

POST E: SECURITY GUARD: NATIONAL CENTRE (2 POSTS)

The Security Guard will report to the Security Supervisor.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safe guarding of University property and personnel;
  • Conducting VIP escorts;
  • Static or patrol guard duties;
  • Cash in transit protection;
  • Presentation of evidence in court;
  • Conducting investigations and arrests;
  • Controlling access to University premises;
  • Controlling of parking bays;
  • Conducting searches; and
  • Performing any other duties as assigned by the Security Supervisor.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Applicants must have five (5) Ordinary level subjects including English language;
  • At least 2 (two) years post qualification experience in a security environment;
  • Should be physically fit;
  • Security guard training from a reputable organisation or certificate of service from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Zimbabwe Prison Service (ZPS) or Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA);

Candidates who do not have the stipulated requirements need not apply.
